why valentine's day is the worst holiday ever...

I want to start by saying that i don't hate valentines day because i don't have anyone special to share it with. I mean, i'm sure thats part of it, but its not the whole story, and eventually when a special someone comes along, i may dislike it less, but i think my opinion will still hold (and it is just my opinion, you don't have to agree).

I think back in jr high, and even high school, i had a great dislike for the holiday, b/c i never had a boyfriend. The only person I got anything from on valentines day was my dad (and still do to this day), but i remeber in gr 7 or 8, student council was selling carnations, and they happened to be selling them during parent teacher interviews. My mom talked my dad into buying one for me (to be delivered later in the week). So the day came (it was most likely actually valentines day, but i'm not sure), and i got the carnation, along with some candy of some kinda delivered in homeroom. For the 1st 5 seconds everyone was all excited for me, b/c i had gotten something, and they wanted to know who from. As soon as i said "my dad", the guys started making fun (and likely some of the girls too). Its not that big of deal, but at the time, it kinda hurt (though i was the only one in the class that got anything, so that was a bonus). Anyway, thats not the point of this post. What i'm saying is back then valentines day was a big deal.
Couples
But now, i have formed more of an opinion i guess.

Cupidfirst of all, why do you need a specific day to show someone how much you care about them?? honestly, i would probably be happier (if i had a boyfriend), that they suprise me with something on any day of the year. The element of suprise is an amazing thing. Why do we need a halmark directed holiday to show that we love/care about someone?? It seems pretty dumb to me.

Datingsecondly, (and i'm kinda sticking up for the guys here) guys have enough trouble remembering birthdays and anniversaries (let alone how many years they are) as it is, why burden them with another holiday to remember to get something for us? Why not just let them suprise us some random day, when they remember (and don't say they never will, lets give them some credit here) or actually feel like it, rather than forcing it on them.

Chocolate Valentineand lastly...society keeps bringing up the issue of obesity - valentines day is just an excuse for us single girls to eat ice cream and chocolate that we bought for ourselves for the occasion (not that we need a special day to do that!)

Why do we need a specific day to show the people in our lives that we love them? there is enoug sh*t in the world already, we should be telling people everyday how much they mean to us...who knows when that will all be taken away from us.

*Seize the day, squeeze the moment*
